Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa has urged all government officials to ensure that the priorities outlined in the National Development Plan for 2025/2026 are clearly translated into their institutions' plans and strategies.
The Prime Minister explained that the plan is dedicated to advancing initiatives that deliver results across five key areas identified in the Third Five-Year National Development Plan.
He made these comments today (Friday, November 8, 2024), while closing the 17th session of the 12th Parliament in Dodoma. He noted that the government, through the President’s Office (Planning and Investment), recently presented the proposed National Development Plan for 2025/2026.
“The government, in collaboration with the private sector, will emphasize high-impact, large-scale flagship projects and focus on the priority areas within the 2025/2026 National Development Plan,” Majaliwa stated.
He outlined these priorities as follows: promoting a competitive and inclusive economy, boosting industrial production and service provision, enhancing investment and trade, fostering social development, and strengthening human resources.
Majaliwa also reported on the government’s revenue collection efforts for the first quarter of the 2024/2025 fiscal year, which reached TZS 11.55 trillion from both domestic and international sources. “Of this total, TZS 7.93 trillion came from domestic revenue, achieving 99.4% of the target of TZS 7.97 trillion,” he said.
The Prime Minister detailed that these revenues include TZS 7.09 trillion collected by the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA), TZS 518.32 billion from non-tax revenue by ministries and autonomous agencies, and TZS 321.32 billion from local government sources.
Majaliwa attributed this success to government strategies such as promoting the use of ICT systems for revenue collection and encouraging the widespread use of electronic fiscal devices (EFDs) for issuing receipts.
“I would like to commend the Tanzania Revenue Authority, led by Mr. Mwenda, and all revenue-collecting bodies for their excellent work,” he said. “I also want to congratulate citizens for their commitment to paying taxes, contributing to the nation’s development.”
He also reminded business owners to issue receipts for all transactions and urged citizens to insist on receiving receipts for their purchases.
“To TRA officials, I emphasize the need to maintain rigorous oversight of revenue collection and to continue educating the public about the importance of tax compliance for our country’s growth,” he added. “I also encourage local councils across the nation to explore new sources of revenue to expand our domestic revenue base.”
