Manchester United were hammered and humiliated by Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon, beaten 3-0 as captain Bruno Fernandes was shown a straight red card.
The match got off in the worst possible way for the hosts as Micky van de Ven embarked on a brilliant run to partner with Brennan Johnson, on early minutes
Andre Onana prevented the scoreline from being any worse, but Fernandes’ knee-high challenge on James Maddison saw him sent-off right before half-time.
Straight after the second half restart, Dejan Kulusevski volleyed in a second, while Dominic Solanke poked in a third for Spurs later on
- but the damage done by spurs made the hosts being woeful and booed off the pitch by a section of their fans at full time.
Meanwhile, Bruno Fernandes said his tackle on James Maddison was “never a red card”
Fernandes, who was sent off for the first time in his United career, received the red card for “serious foul play” despite protesting his innocence.
The captain, who volunteered to speak to Sky Sports after the full-time whistle claimed that Maddison admitted to him that his tackle was not worthy of a red card.
"I don’t take him as everyone wants to see it. I don’t go in with the studs, I take him with my ankle, it’s a clear foul but never a red card,” Fernandes told Sky Sports.
"You can see it’s never a red card and if it is, we have to look at many other incidents. I have many incidents against me and I’ve never seen it come so quick as a red card." He added.
On the other hand, pundits of sky sports including Garry Neville added that they've witnessed one of the worst performance under Eric ten Haag
He has gone knee high Bruno Fernandes. I think he slips just before the tackle, but he is not going to get away with it,” Neville said on Sky Sports.
It’s one of the worst performances I have seen under Ten Hag - and that is saying something. It is really bad.”
