1,500 children to benefit from cardiac treatment at JKCI

A recent fundraising event led by former Tanzanian President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete has sparked hope for over 1,500 Tanzanian children suffering from heart conditions, who are now set to receive essential medical treatment at the Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute (JKCI).

The event brought together a wide array of stakeholders from both the private and public sectors, all committed to addressing the heart health needs of these young patients.

The funds raised aim to support treatment costs, ensuring that children with critical heart issues receive timely and effective care.

Dr. Kikwete, speaking at the event, applauded JKCI for its dedication to improving heart healthcare for Tanzanians. He emphasized the institute’s founding vision, which was to reduce the need for patients to seek costly medical care abroad by establishing advanced cardiac services within the country.

“There was a time when heart treatment options in Tanzania were very limited, and many had no choice but to seek help outside the country. Our goal in establishing JKCI was to change that, enabling our people to access life-saving treatments here at home,” he said.

Dr. Kikwete also expressed gratitude to the fifth and sixth administrations for their steadfast support of the institute, citing the provision of modern medical equipment and critical resources as vital to JKCI's growth.

“I commend the efforts of the previous and current governments. Their contributions have enabled this institution to continue enhancing its capabilities with advanced tools and necessary facilities,” he added.

JKCI’s Director General, Dr. Peter Kisenge, further highlighted the impact of the fundraising campaign, noting that among the 1,500 children in need, 500 are in urgent condition and require immediate treatment to save their lives.

The campaign also received significant support from a team of African cardiac specialists, who joined hands with JKCI to ensure the success of this vital initiative.
