The Commissioner General of the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA), Mr. Yusuph Juma Mwenda, today, May 5, 2025, received an update on the ongoing collaboration project between TRA and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). He noted that the partnership continues to yield positive results for both parties.
Speaking during a joint meeting held in Dar es Salaam, Commissioner General Mwenda emphasized the importance of ensuring that the support provided by JICA contributes meaningfully to expanding the tax base and promoting fairness in tax compliance.
He expressed sincere appreciation to JICA for its continued commitment to the project, particularly in strengthening the capacity of TRA staff.
However, he also highlighted the growing challenge of e-commerce, urging stakeholders to prioritize this area to improve revenue collection.
“We see great potential in increasing tax revenue through e-commerce, especially if we can effectively identify online businesses. Many traders have transitioned from traditional methods to digital platforms, and this shift must be addressed strategically,” Mwenda stated.
On his part, JICA Resident Representative Mr. Hitoshi Ara reaffirmed JICA’s dedication to the collaboration with TRA.
He noted that the project is structured in three phases, with the third phase already underway, focusing heavily on capacity building for TRA personnel.
