1. Despite their massive size, elephants walk with barely a sound, thanks to their sponge-like foot pads that absorb impact.
2. An adult elephant can weigh up to 7 tons.
3. Female elephants have the longest gestation period of any land animal, carrying their calves for 24 months, or 2 years.
4. Newborn elephant calves are born weighing about 80 kg (176 lbs).
5. Elephants have an enormous appetite, consuming around 300 kg (660 lbs) of vegetation and drinking 40 liters (10.5 gallons) of water each day.
