The Deputy Minister of Energy, Hon. Judith Kapinga, has outlined the government's ongoing efforts to expand compressed natural gas (CNG) infrastructure across the country.
She stated that, for the 2024/2025 fiscal year, the government, through the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC), is working on building new CNG filling stations in key regions.
“We are constructing two CNG filling stations in Dar es Salaam and one in Pwani,” said Kapinga.
“Additionally, TPDC is purchasing mobile CNG filling units that will be set up in Dar es Salaam, Morogoro, and Dodoma.” She explained that three units would be placed in Dar es Salaam, one in Morogoro, and two in Dodoma.
Hon. Kapinga made these remarks on August 27, 2024, during the Question and Answer session in Parliament held in Dodoma.
She emphasized that these new stations and mobile units are part of the government’s broader strategy to promote the use of cleaner energy sources for vehicles.
Currently, Tanzania has five CNG filling stations in operation.
“We have CNG stations at Ubungo Maziwa, Tazara, and the Airport in Dar es Salaam, as well as in Mkuranga, Pwani, and at the Dangote facility in Mtwara,” Kapinga noted.
She also addressed the government's plan to convert official vehicles to CNG systems.
“A consultant has been hired to oversee this transition. Our goal is to ensure the process is efficient and effective,” said Kapinga.
She assured that this move is part of the government's commitment to reducing fuel costs and promoting environmental sustainability through the use of natural gas.
