The Shinyanga Regional Commissioner, Anamringi Macha, has directed all District Commissioners and Directors within the region to ensure that all markets and public places maintain cleanliness at all times. These areas are vital for food supply and often serve as gathering spots for large crowds.

The Regional boss made this announcement today, September 20, 2024, while leading a community clean-up at the Nguzonane market in Shinyanga Municipality, coinciding with World Cleanup Day.

He emphasized the importance of cleanliness in these key areas, where the majority of food is sourced and where people congregate.

Meanwhile, Shinyanga Regional Administrative Secretary CP. Salum Hamduni noted that World Cleanup Day originated in Estonia, where 4% of the population spontaneously engaged in nationwide clean-up efforts, fostering a sense of community and inspiring a global movement under the motto "One Country, One Day." This initiative has since grown into a worldwide event held on September 20, promoting not only cleanliness but also a strategic fight against diseases linked to environmental pollution.

Cleanliness is a crucial issue that impacts everyone. It plays a significant role in preventing infectious diseases such as respiratory illnesses, diarrhea, and malaria. The theme for this year's observance is "Life Has No Substitute, Prioritize Environmental Cleanliness."

In November 2022, the Shinyanga Municipal Council was awarded first place in the National Health and Environmental Cleanliness Competition among municipal councils in mainland Tanzania, achieving an impressive 87%. This accolade was presented at a ceremony in Dodoma, attended by the Deputy Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Seif Shekalaghe.

Following the announcement, Shinyanga Municipal Director, Dr. Jomaary Mrisho Satura, expressed gratitude for the hard work of his team, attributing their success to collective efforts. He highlighted that their achievements are a testament to dedication and commitment to cleanliness.

On May 9, 2023, the Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr. Philip Isdor Mpango, recognized the Shinyanga Municipal Council for its national achievements in environmental cleanliness, with the award received by the Mayor, Mhe. Elias Masumbuko. This recognition highlights the region's ongoing commitment to maintaining high standards of hygiene and health for its citizens.
