Kilimanjaro. Nehemiah Mchechu, on Sunday (October 20), led a fundraiser that secured Sh117.8 million to support the ongoing construction of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania (ELCT), Naibili Parish, in Siha, Kilimanjaro.
Mr Mchechu is prominent Tanzanian leader and business executive known for his extensive experience in finance, housing, and corporate governance.
Of the total amount that was raised, some Sh50.2 million was in cash, Sh66.5 million in pledges, and Sh1.1 million through an auction during the fundraising event.
Additionally, 118 bags of cement were donated to support the project.
According to Bishop Dr. Fredrick Shoo, Head of the ELCT Northern Diocese, the funds and cement will be used for roofing and plastering the new church building, which has been under construction for six years.
The roofing and plastering are expected to cost Sh150 million.
Speaking to religious, government, and community leaders, as well as Naibili Parish members, Mr. Mchechu emphasized the importance of maintaining a spirit of giving and collaboration until the church construction is completed.
The cornerstone has already been laid for the building.
Mr. Mchechu urged christians not to stop at this stage.
“As we continue with this construction, I urge you, beloved members, not to stop here. Let us continue working together until the building is complete,” he said.
He added, “The church still needs your contributions, prayers, and willingness to offer your time and resources. Everyone can give something – be it money, time, or any service.”
He assured them that giving from the heart would bring blessings, and God would give back abundantly.
Quoting Luke 6:38, Mr. Mchechu said: “Give, and it will be given to you: A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over, will be poured into your lap.”
He added, “Just as Nehemiah led the people of Jerusalem to rebuild the city wall after its destruction, I encourage you to remain committed and diligent in building this house of God.”
Bishop Dr. Shoo said their goal is to complete the plastering, install windows, doors, and an altar, paint the church, and begin preparations for furniture installation by 2026.
So far, Sh229.8 million has been spent up to the pre-roofing stage, thanks to the contributions of well-wishers and God’s blessings.
After the roofing and plastering, the second phase will focus on building the altar, installing windows, and fitting wooden doors.
The following phase will involve flooring, installing ceiling boards, electrical wiring, and painting.
From there the next phase will be installing chairs and completing the altar with wood.
The last stage will involve installing musical instruments, CCTV systems, air conditioning, and ICT infrastructure.
“This is the right time to unite and complete the blessing-filled task ahead of us. May God give us strength,” concluded Bishop Shoo.
