Tanzania Fashion Festival 2024: A Bold New Era for Local Talent

By Lookman Miraji

The Tanzania Fashion Festival (TAFF) has taken on a new look after its latest event, held on Saturday, September 28, 2024, at the Terrace Hall in Slipway Hotel, Masaki, Dar es Salaam. The festival, which first began in 2018, is now in its seventh year.

This year, Tanzanian models and fashion designers came together to showcase their talent. The goal was to highlight the growth and potential of the local fashion industry.

Niller Benard, an international model from Tanzania and one of the event organizers, spoke to The Respondent about how proud they were to see the festival grow each year.

"We’re happy to see improvements every time compared to previous years. This year, we saw major changes, from the selection of models and designers to the quality of the outfits on display," said Niller.

She also mentioned that despite the changes, the festival remains focused on promoting and protecting Tanzanian culture. The event is recognized by the National Arts Council (BASATA), which ensures the fashion presented is respectful of local values.

"There has been a big interest from designers in using this platform to promote themselves and their work. As organizers, we’ve focused on maintaining high standards, making sure the fashion stays within Tanzanian moral guidelines because we are approved by BASATA," she added.

Niller also urged the government, especially the Ministry of Culture, Arts, and Sports, to give more support to the fashion industry, similar to what other art forms, like acting and music, receive.

She explained that many Tanzanian models are talented but lack the resources needed to succeed internationally.

"Our main request is for the government to recognize the fashion industry, just like acting and music. Through this festival, we’re asking the government to offer training programs for our models, who are talented but need support to reach the global stage," she said.

One of the key sponsors of the event, JC Decaux, an advertising company, shared their pride in being part of the festival.

Gureni Ikamba, a representative of the company, said their involvement fits their focus on environmental, social, and governance issues.

"For us, it’s an honor to participate in this fashion festival. We’ve been part of it for several years now. Our strategy is to support areas like the environment, social matters, and governance. This festival fits well under the social aspect, and we believe it contributes a lot to the community," Ikamba said.

He also pointed out that the fashion industry brings together different people, from business owners and investors to regular community members.

This creates opportunities for collaboration and ideas that can benefit society.

This year’s festival featured more than 30 models and 24 fashion designers. Several fashion-related companies participated as sponsors, helping to make the event a success.
