Dar es Salaam: Motorists across Tanzania have welcomed a decrease in fuel prices this October, bringing relief after months of high costs.
The Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (Ewura) announced the new rates on Wednesday, attributing the decrease to falling fuel prices in the Middle East.
According to Ewura, petrol prices for fuel imported through Dar es Salaam have fallen from Sh3,140 per litre in September to Sh3,011 in October, reflecting a 4.1 percent reduction.
Similarly, petrol prices from the Tanga port dropped from Sh3,141 to Sh3,016 per litre, while at Mtwara, prices decreased from Sh3,142 to Sh3,016 per litre.
Diesel prices followed the same downward trend. At Dar es Salaam, diesel prices went from Sh3,011 in September to Sh2,846 in October.
In Tanga, diesel prices decreased from Sh3,020 to Sh2,859, and at Mtwara, they fell from Sh3,021 to Sh2,862 per litre.
Ewura’s Director General, Dr. James Mwainyekule, explained that the fuel price adjustments were driven by lower prices in the Arabian market.
"Our pricing is based on the Free on Board (FOB) costs from the Arabian market, and the October 2024 rates reflect the September market trends," he noted.
He also highlighted that compared to August 2024, petrol prices had dropped by 7.42 percent, diesel by 9.15 percent, and kerosene by 8.23 percent.
While the import cost (premium) for petrol saw a slight increase of 2.63 percent, diesel premiums dropped significantly by 16.58 percent, and kerosene premiums fell by 3.39 percent.
This reduction in fuel prices is expected to ease economic pressure on households and businesses across the country.
