On October 2, 2024, the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) has suspended the online media service licenses of Mwananchi Communications Limited for a period of 30 days, effective from October 1, 2024.
The suspension follows the publication of audio-visual content deemed to violate the country's Online Content Regulations of 2020.
The decision affects Mwananchi Communications Limited’s digital platforms, including The Citizen, Mwananchi, Mwananchi Digital, and Mwanaspoti, which have been providing online content services to the public.
According to TCRA, the media company violated Section 16 of the Online Content Regulations by sharing prohibited content.
The content in question was published on the company’s social media platforms and failed to meet legal standards, particularly those aimed at protecting national unity and the image of the country.
The notice, signed by TCRA Director General Jabiri K. Bakari, emphasized the gravity of the violations and their potential to disrupt peace and harmony.
TCRA highlighted that the suspension would remain in place for 30 days, during which the media house is prohibited from offering any online content services.
This includes content distributed through The Citizen, Mwananchi Digital, Mwananchi, and Mwanaspoti platforms.
TCRA further stated that this action was taken in adherence to the law, with the agency closely monitoring the situation to ensure compliance with regulations aimed at safeguarding Tanzania’s media landscape.
Mwananchi Communications Limited has been informed of the suspension, and any further actions will be determined as the regulatory authority continues to assess the matter.
