Dar es Salaam – The North Mara mine in Tarime District, Mara Region, jointly owned by Barrick and the Tanzanian government through Twiga Minerals, has once again claimed the prestigious overall Employer of the Year award from the Association of Tanzania Employers (ATE).

This marks a repeat victory following last year’s triumph, solidifying the mine’s reputation for excellence.

The mine also won several other accolades, including Community Responsibility, Health and Safety in the Workplace awards, and second place in the category of Best Employer in the private sector.

It was also recognized for compliance with local content regulations. Meanwhile, Barrick’s Bulyanhulu mine earned a notable award for adherence to legal and regulatory standards from oversight authorities.

The awards ceremony, held recently at the Serena Hotel in Dar es Salaam, was graced by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Dr. Doto Biteko, who was the guest of honor.

Barrick’s Communications Manager, Georgia Mutagahywa, hailed the recognition as a testament to North Mara’s commitment to operating at international standards, prioritizing health and safety, and fostering Tanzanian talent.

With 96% of its workforce being locals and all leadership positions held by Tanzanians, the mine continues to champion inclusivity and empowerment.

The company also strongly emphasizes integrating women into its workforce, with women thriving in various key roles across its operations.

Mutagahywa highlighted the mine’s efforts to maintain positive employee relations and its focus on holistic health, which extends beyond the workplace through sports and fitness programs.

Barrick and Twiga Mines have been instrumental in driving impactful community development projects in areas surrounding their operations. Their contributions span critical sectors such as education, healthcare, clean water provision, and infrastructure development.

Between 2020 and 2024, Barrick North Mara invested over 22 billion Tanzanian shillings in executing 253 community projects aimed at transforming lives and fostering sustainable development.

The North Mara mine stands as a model of responsible mining, setting benchmarks for social responsibility, environmental stewardship, and adherence to global safety standards.

These achievements underline its dedication to uplifting local communities and its unwavering commitment to Tanzania’s broader development agenda.
