By Alfred Zacharia

The Vice President of Tanzania, Dr. Philip Mpango, is set to depart on Friday (November 08) for Baku, Azerbaijan, where he will represent President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan at the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

Scheduled to run from November 11 to 22, the summit will gather world leaders, policymakers, and climate advocates to address the urgent global challenges posed by climate change and to promote cooperation toward sustainable solutions.

A statement signed by Franco Singaile, Assistant Communication Officer to the Vice President's Office says that Dr. Mpango’s attendance signals Tanzania’s dedication to climate action and sustainable development.

"In his address to the conference, he will outline Tanzania’s ongoing efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, safeguard natural resources, and build resilience against climate impacts," the statement says in part.

The Vice President is expected to highlight Tanzania’s priority areas, including the transition to renewable energy, climate-smart agriculture, and sustainable urban planning as key pillars of the country’s approach to climate adaptation and mitigation.

While in Azerbaijan, Dr. Mpango will engage in high-level discussions alongside other heads of state and government representatives.

He will attend special sessions that focus on practical measures for climate adaptation and resilience, including investment in clean energy, adoption of low-carbon technologies, and expansion of the blue economy.

Particular attention will be given to preserving Tanzania’s coastal and inland water ecosystems, which play a critical role in both environmental health and economic growth.

Dr. Mpango is also scheduled to meet bilaterally with leaders from other countries and executives from international organizations and corporations.

These meetings aim to foster partnerships that align with Tanzania’s climate and development goals, potentially opening avenues for technical assistance, capacity building, and investment in green projects. His engagements will underscore Tanzania’s readiness to collaborate globally to achieve its ambitious climate agenda.

Accompanying the Vice President is a delegation of senior officials and climate experts from both the Union Government of Tanzania and the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar, who will support Tanzania’s contributions to the summit and provide technical expertise in discussions.
