Several individuals are in police custody in Pwani Region for allegedly being in possession of stolen public infrastructure materials belonging to the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (Tanesco), Dar es Salaam Water and Sewerage Authority (Dawasa), and Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC).
The confiscated materials were found stored at a construction supplies factory in Mkuranga District following an operation led by Pwani Regional Commissioner Abubakari Kunenge.
The operation, conducted in collaboration with law enforcement and other stakeholders, targeted the theft and sabotage of infrastructure vital to national development.
Speaking at the scene, Kunenge expressed disappointment over the actions of some individuals who undermine national progress by stealing public assets.
“Despite the government’s significant investment in improving infrastructure, there are those who betray the nation by engaging in theft and sabotage. We will take strict action and pursue the culprits wherever they are,” Kunenge stated.
The operation is part of a broader crackdown on infrastructure theft, an issue that has gained attention due to its detrimental effects on essential services and the economy.
In December 2024, police arrested four suspects in separate incidents involving stolen materials from Tanesco and TRC.
On December 13, two suspects were apprehended with 426 copper tiles weighing 7,728 kilograms and 2,628.5 kilograms of copper cables stolen from Tanesco. The suspects also had 430 kilograms of TRC copper wires and processed copper pieces designed to obscure their origin.
On December 12, two additional suspects of Asian origin were detained in Mkuranga. They were found with 608.6 kilograms of Tanesco copper wires and 5,500.17 kilograms of TRC copper materials, which were stored at their factory.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to combating infrastructure theft, urging communities to report suspicious activities.
Kunenge emphasized the importance of safeguarding public resources, which are crucial for ensuring sustainable development and improved services for citizens.
Investigations are ongoing, and the suspects are expected to face legal action soon.
