By Victoria Godfrey

The construction of the long-awaited Dodoma Football Stadium officially began on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, a major step in enhancing Tanzania's sports infrastructure.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information, Culture, Arts, and Sports and the Government Spokesperson, Gerson Msigwa, handed over the project site to Limonta SPA, an Italian company tasked with the stadium’s construction.

The event took place in the Nzuguni area of Dodoma, where the state-of-the-art facility will be built.

In his remarks, Msigwa highlighted the significance of this project for Tanzania’s sports development. “This stadium will be a key asset for Dodoma, the entire nation, and Africa as a whole. We are confident that this modern venue will help raise the profile of our sports,” he said during the handover ceremony.

Angelo Redolfi, the representative from Limonta SPA, also signed the agreement alongside Msigwa, marking the official start of the construction process.

The project is expected to be completed within 24 months, with the stadium set to be ready in time for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

“This stadium will be handed over to us in 24 months, and the government will closely monitor the project to ensure it meets the required standards and is completed on time for use in the 2027 AFCON competitions,” Msigwa affirmed.

The new facility will play a critical role in the country’s preparations for the prestigious continental tournament, which is expected to draw thousands of fans from across the region.

The contract for the stadium’s construction was signed by the government and Limonta SPA on February 13, 2025, in Dodoma.

The project, which is estimated to cost over 358 billion Tanzanian shillings, will provide the country with a world-class sports facility.

Upon completion, the stadium will have the capacity to accommodate 32,000 spectators, making it one of the largest venues in Tanzania.

The construction will be closely supervised by the Ministry of Information, Culture, Arts, and Sports to ensure that the project is completed according to the highest standards.

Msigwa emphasized that the government’s commitment to this project is unwavering. “We are investing in this stadium not just for football, but for the entire sports community in Tanzania. It will be a hub for various sporting events, concerts, and cultural activities. The benefits of this stadium will reach far beyond the field of play,” he noted.

The government anticipates that the stadium will not only serve as a venue for major sports events but will also contribute to the growth of tourism and the local economy.

The stadium’s construction is expected to create numerous job opportunities for the people of Dodoma and surrounding regions. Local businesses and service providers will also see an uptick in demand as the project progresses, providing a boost to the regional economy.

“This project will bring job opportunities to our people, create a platform for young athletes, and foster a sense of national pride,” Msigwa added.

The stadium is also expected to serve as a catalyst for further development in Dodoma. In addition to providing a modern venue for football matches, the stadium will be suitable for hosting other major events, such as concerts, festivals, and international sporting competitions.

“This stadium is just the beginning of a new era for Dodoma. It will transform the city into a regional hub for sports and entertainment,” Msigwa concluded.

With the 2027 AFCON tournament on the horizon, the Dodoma Football Stadium will provide Tanzania with an opportunity to showcase its growing sports infrastructure to the world.

Msigwa reassured the public that the Ministry would closely oversee the project to ensure it meets the required standards.

“We will ensure that the construction is on track and that the stadium meets international standards,” he said.

The Dodoma Football Stadium is expected to be a game-changer for Tanzania’s sports scene, providing a state-of-the-art venue for athletes and fans alike.

As the project moves forward, it is clear that this stadium will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of sports in Tanzania, elevating the country's profile on the African and international stages.

With construction now underway, the Dodoma Football Stadium will stand as a lasting symbol of Tanzania’s commitment to developing its sports infrastructure and providing world-class facilities for future generations of athletes.

As the countdown to the 2027 AFCON continues, all eyes will be on Dodoma, where this exciting new chapter in Tanzanian sports is unfolding.
