BoT: only 2003 banknotes withdrawn, others still valid

The Bank of Tanzania has assured the public that only the TZS 10,000 and TZS 5,000 banknotes issued in 2003 are being withdrawn from circulation, and that newer versions of the same denominations remain valid.

In a statement issued on April 4, 2025, the Governor of the Bank of Tanzania, Emmanuel M. Tutuba, clarified that the withdrawal exercise began on January 6, 2025, and will end on April 5, 2025.

“These 2003 series notes will no longer be legal tender from April 6, 2025,” said Governor Tutuba. “We want to make it clear that the notes from 2010 and onwards are not part of this withdrawal and will continue to be used.”

He explained that the banknotes which remain legal include those signed by different finance ministers and central bank governors over the years.

These include signatures from Saada Mkuya and Prof. Benno Ndulu, Mustafa Mkulo and Prof. Benno Ndulu, Dr. Philip Mpango and Prof. Florens Luoga, as well as Dr. Mwigulu Nchemba and the current Governor himself.

“We urge the public to check the year of issue and not panic,” he added. “Only the 2003 series are being phased out, and the public is advised to exchange them before the deadline.”

The Bank encouraged anyone seeking clarification to reach out through its official communication platforms or visit its offices.
