The Minister of State in the Office of the President, Regional Administration and Local Government, Mohamed Mchengerwa, has urged Regional and District Commissioners nationwide to actively encourage citizen participation in the 2025 Independence Uhuru Torch.
This year’s relay aims to inspire the implementation of development projects in local councils, improving service delivery and advancing national development.
Speaking at Ukombozi Primary School in Ikwiriri before welcoming the National Uhuru Torch Leader, Ismail Ussi, Mchengerwa emphasized the importance of citizens being actively involved in all areas where the Independence Torch will visit.
"The Torch Relay is a powerful tool for promoting development," said Mchengerwa. "It accompanies the inauguration of critical development projects, and the participation of citizens is an invaluable opportunity to build awareness and foster engagement in the management and implementation of these projects."
The Minister also instructed Regional Commissioners, District Commissioners, and Council Directors to encourage full citizen participation in these activities.
He stressed that their role is essential in ensuring the relay's success in fostering a deeper understanding of the government’s development efforts.
Mchengerwa further highlighted the significant progress made in Rufiji District, mentioning several ongoing development projects, including the construction of schools, roads, markets, health centers, and dispensaries.
"Some of these projects will be inspected by the Independence Torch this year," he added.
In his address, Ismail Ussi reminded Tanzanians of the importance of upholding the philosophy of the Father of the Nation.
"Every Tanzanian must honor the values instilled by our founding leader," Ussi stated. "President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan has furthered this vision by entrusting me with the responsibility of leading the 2025 Independence Uhuru Torch. During the relay, we will inspect and inaugurate development projects that meet the highest standards."
