New explosives factory in Kisarawe to boost Tanzania’s mining industry

By The Respondent Reporter

The government is making significant strides in its efforts to establish Tanzania as a leading hub for the production of mining-related products, with a focus on reducing reliance on imports.

On April 13, 2025, the Minister for Minerals,  Anthony Mavunde (MP), inaugurated the Solar Nitrochemicals Limited explosives factory in Kisarawe District.

This new facility is set to produce 22,000 tons of explosives and 15 million detonators annually, addressing the nation’s current annual consumption of 26,000 tons of explosives and 10 million detonators.

The establishment of this factory is a direct result of President Samia S. Hassan’s tireless work in creating a favorable investment climate in Tanzania, making the country more attractive to both local and international investors.

As part of its continued commitment to fostering a conducive business environment, the government is ensuring that investors are well-supported and protected, enabling them to contribute to the country’s economic growth.

The factory is expected to create over 300 direct jobs and approximately 1,000 indirect jobs, while also reducing production costs for the mining sector by providing locally sourced explosives.

Mr. Kishor Bhomale, the Resident Director of Solar Nitrochemicals Limited, disclosed that the factory’s construction was financed with an investment of $8 million, equivalent to 19 billion Tanzanian shillings. The factory aims to serve both the domestic and international markets.

Kisarawe District Commissioner,  Petro Magoti, highlighted that the new factory will significantly boost the district's economic growth.

He also mentioned that a large area has been allocated for industrial development, with plans to attract more investors to establish factories producing various goods in the region.

This initiative underscores the government's ongoing efforts to create a vibrant industrial sector that will play a key role in driving Tanzania’s economic transformation."
