PM urges journalists to embrace AI responsibly

By The Respondent Reporter

Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa has called on journalists across Tanzania to embrace Artificial Intelligence (AI) as an enabler of their profession  a tool to improve efficiency and depth in reporting  rather than viewing it as a threat to press freedom.

Speaking at the national commemoration of World Press Freedom Day, held at Gran Meliá Hotel in Arusha, the Prime Minister emphasized the urgent need for the media to adapt to the digital era while upholding the core values of transparency, accuracy, and accountability.

“In this digital age, the media must evolve with the tools of our time,” said the Prime Minister. “Artificial Intelligence should not be feared  it should be harnessed. It must serve as a tool for strengthening journalism, not as a barrier to freedom of expression.”

He revealed that the Government is currently formulating a comprehensive national AI policy, which will provide clear guidance for its ethical and effective use in the media sector.

“We are preparing a policy that will ensure the use of AI is aligned with the principles of press freedom, integrity, and public interest,” Majaliwa said.

“AI, if used responsibly, can support journalists in delivering faster, deeper, and more inclusive reporting  but it must not replace critical thinking or ethical judgment.”

The Prime Minister acknowledged the critical role of the media in national development, emphasizing its power in shaping public opinion, driving civic engagement, and holding leadership accountable.

“Journalists are not just storytellers  they are the bridge between the people and the truth,” he stated. “Your work informs, educates, and inspires action. We count on you to continue that work with professionalism, patriotism, and unwavering commitment to ethical standards.”

Majaliwa also praised the media’s role in promoting peace, unity, and national cohesion, while projecting a positive image of Tanzania to the world.

In support of the Prime Minister’s remarks, Minister of Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, Prof. Palamagamba Kabudi, urged journalists to take ownership of AI as a powerful asset in the newsroom.

“Let us not be passive observers of technology,” said Prof. Kabudi. “AI is not the enemy of journalism  it is a powerful companion when guided by the values of truth and responsibility.”

Earlier, Gerson Msigwa, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, took the opportunity to commend Tanzanian journalists for their courage, persistence, and service to the public interest.

“You are the voice of the people. Thank you for championing hope, especially in difficult times,” Msigwa said.

The event brought together media stakeholders, government leaders, civil society, and academics to reflect on the challenges and opportunities posed by AI in journalism  reaffirming the nation's commitment to a free, independent, and forward-looking media landscape.
