In a continued effort to promote clean cooking solutions, the Rural Energy Agency (REA) has partnered with Manjis Gas Company to distribute 22,785 gas cylinders across the Coast Region at a 50 percent subsidized rate.

Speaking during the project briefing held on April 16, 2025, at the Coast Regional Commissioner’s Office, REA Senior Development Officer Ms. Jaina Msuya said the initiative aligns with the National Clean Cooking Energy Strategy, which targets 80 percent nationwide adoption of clean energy for cooking by 2034.

"The objective is to increase access to clean cooking energy, especially for low-income households. This will help preserve the environment, reduce cooking time, and empower communities to participate more effectively in economic, social, and political activities. It will also play a critical role in reducing respiratory and eye-related health issues caused by traditional cooking methods,” she said.

The project, valued at TZS 398,737,500, will see an equal allocation of 3,255 six-kilogram gas cylinders to each of the seven districts in the region: Bagamoyo, Kibaha, Rufiji, Kibiti, Mkuranga, Kisarawe, and Mafia.

Acting Regional Administrative Secretary for Songwe, Mr. Shangwe Twamala, applauded the initiative and called for its sustainability to ensure continued access to affordable clean energy for the wider population.

Manjis Gas Company, tasked with executing the project, reaffirmed its commitment to delivering on the agreement.

“We are fully prepared to distribute the gas cylinders, provide user education, and carry out awareness campaigns to encourage widespread adoption of clean energy,” said Mr. Gracious Maimu, the company’s representative.

This project marks a significant step forward in Tanzania’s clean energy agenda and underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring safe, affordable, and sustainable energy solutions reach every corner of the country.
