President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan has urged media outlets across Tanzania to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and ethical journalism to help strengthen peace, unity, and national stability, particularly as the country prepares for the 2025 General Elections.
Her call comes as Tanzania joined the global community in commemorating World Press Freedom Day on May 3, 2025.
This year’s national celebrations were held in Arusha Region, beginning on April 27 with a series of activities including media capacity-building workshops, fitness exercises, awareness campaigns for journalists, and a domestic tourism event that concluded on April 30.
In her official message shared via social media, President Samia extended her best wishes to journalists and all stakeholders in the media sector, acknowledging the strides the country has made in promoting press freedom and access to information.
“Happy World Press Freedom Day. I am encouraged by the progress we have made in enhancing media freedom and freedom of expression. In 2025, Tanzania has improved its standing in the global press freedom index. This achievement reflects the dedication and efforts of all stakeholders in this critical sector,” President Samia stated.
She went on to emphasize the crucial role of the media in building a cohesive society, especially during politically sensitive periods.
“I urge all media institutions to embrace professionalism in their reporting to continue nurturing peace, unity, and national cohesion particularly as we approach the General Elections,” she added.
The President also highlighted the indispensable role journalists play in national development, saying they are not only observers but active partners in shaping the country’s future.
“Journalists are not just facilitators of government communication; they are key partners in safeguarding the very essence and sustainability of our nation,” she noted.
President Samia’s remarks align with growing calls from media practitioners and civil society organizations for more responsible journalism and the protection of media freedoms.
Her message is expected to inspire media houses to remain committed to accurate, balanced, and constructive reporting.
As Tanzania continues to promote democratic values and civic engagement, the role of the media remains central in educating, informing, and uniting the public.
