The Speaker of the National Assembly of the United Republic of Tanzania and President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), Dr. Tulia Ackson, on May 8, 2025, welcomed the newly appointed Secretary General of the Forum of Parliaments of Member States of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (FP-ICGLR), Dr. Deo Mwapinga, during a courtesy visit at her office in Parliament, Dodoma.
Speaking during the meeting, Dr. Tulia congratulated Dr. Mwapinga on his appointment and pledged Tanzania’s strong support for his leadership.
“I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Mwapinga for earning the trust of member states to lead this important regional institution,” she said.
“Tanzania is committed to strengthening partnerships that promote democracy, good governance, and sustainable development across the Great Lakes Region.”
She emphasized that regional parliamentary collaboration plays a key role in addressing common challenges and advancing peace and stability in the region.
“The Parliament of the United Republic of Tanzania stands ready to support FP-ICGLR in achieving its goals. Through unity and dialogue, we can make meaningful progress for our people,” added Hon. Dr. Tulia.
On his part, Dr. Mwapinga expressed gratitude for the warm reception and support extended by the Tanzanian Parliament, noting that his leadership will focus on enhancing the visibility and impact of the Forum.
“I am deeply honored to serve as Secretary General of FP-ICGLR,” said Dr. Mwapinga. “This role carries great responsibility, and I look forward to working closely with all member parliaments to deepen our cooperation and collective efforts for regional progress.”
Dr. Mwapinga was elected to the position on April 25, 2025, during a high-level meeting of Speakers from FP-ICGLR member parliaments held in Luanda, Angola. According to the Forum’s Constitution, he will serve a renewable three-year term.
