Tanzania boosts cultural heritage preservation through Museum at UDOM

By Sixmund Begashe, Dodoma

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism is stepping up its efforts to preserve Tanzania’s rich cultural and historical heritage through a strategic partnership with the University of Dodoma (UDOM), which is set to establish a permanent museum on its campus.

This initiative is part of a broader national agenda to appreciate, develop, and safeguard the country's traditions, customs, and history for the benefit of both current and future generations.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of a cultural exhibition in Dodoma showcasing Tanzania’s diverse ethnic groups, Dr. Christowaja Ntandu, Director of the Department of Antiquities, emphasized that the planned museum at UDOM will serve as a vital hub for academic research, entrepreneurial training, and youth empowerment.

"We are committed to supporting the establishment of this permanent museum. It will not only enhance cultural research but also offer training in entrepreneurship and open up new opportunities for young people interested in starting projects related to culture and tourism,” said Dr. Ntandu.

She also highlighted the significant support provided by the Sixth Phase Government under President Samia Suluhu Hassan, particularly in creating educational opportunities that enable youth to explore and benefit from the cultural and heritage sector.

Professor Razack Lokina, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic, Research, and Consultancy at UDOM, affirmed the university’s dedication to this initiative.

He noted that UDOM has already begun collecting cultural artifacts, particularly from the Gogo community, as a foundational step toward the museum’s development.

Our university is deeply committed to nurturing talent, leadership, and Tanzanian values through inclusive, development-focused education. We are determined to ensure that every graduate leaves not only with knowledge and skills, but also with a strong sense of self-reliance,” said Prof. Lokina.

The exhibition, held under the theme "Our Culture is the Heart of the Nation – Let’s Celebrate It", featured vibrant displays from various ethnic communities, including traditional dances and attire from the Haya, Gogo, Sukuma, Maasai, Hehe, and Zanzibari cultures.
