Passenger train derails in Uvinza, injuring 70 people

A passenger train derailed last night in Uvinza, Kigoma Region, injuring 70 people, according to the Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC).

The accident occurred around 7:30 PM near Kazuramimba Station, involving train Y14, which was traveling from Kigoma to Dar es Salaam.

The train, consisting of 12 passenger wagons, a cargo wagon, and a brake van, was carrying 571 passengers bound for Tabora, Dodoma, Morogoro, Pwani, and Dar es Salaam.

Six wagons derailed, causing injuries to 26 women and 44 men.

TRC, with support from the Kigoma Regional Health Department, immediately sent the injured people to Uvinza Hospital.

Out of the 70 injured, 57 passengers have been treated and discharged, eight are still receiving treatment at Uvinza District Hospital, and five have been transferred to Maweni Regional Hospital in Kigoma.

“The train continued its journey to Tabora, Dodoma, Morogoro, Pwani, and Dar es Salaam following the incident,” said Jamila Mbarouk, Head of Public Relations at TRC.

“We extend our sympathies to those affected and are committed to providing the necessary support and care,” she added.

The cause of the derailment is still under investigation.

No fatalities have been reported, and TRC is working closely with medical teams to ensure all injured passengers receive proper care.
