The
Tanzania Rural and Urban Roads Agency (TARURA) has announced plans to upgrade
its road network by paving more roads with asphalt and improving gravel roads
to higher standards, following a significant budget increase of more than
threefold.
TARURA
Advisory Board Chairman, Engineer Florian Kabaka, shared this information
during a press briefing at the AICC grounds in Arusha, where an ongoing
workshop for public institution leaders was organized by the Treasury
Registrar's Office.
"TARURA
is committed to enhancing road construction efforts, as our budget has tripled
in the last three years, allowing us to maintain and improve our roads'
quality. We extend our gratitude to President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan for
continuously increasing our budget each year," said Engineer Kabaka.
He
highlighted that the increased funding will enable TARURA to improve the road
network annually, upgrading gravel roads to asphalt and dirt roads to
high-quality gravel standards.
Engineer
Kabaka also noted that TARURA's laboratory would continue to ensure the quality
of infrastructure projects by testing all construction materials before any
work begins, avoiding substandard construction.
TARURA’s
Chief Consultant Engineer Pharles Ngeleja emphasized the vastness of the
agency’s road network and the adoption of alternative technologies to open up
roads across the country more efficiently.
"So
far, we have constructed 28 kilometers of roads using alternative technologies
in the Mwanza, Kigoma, Rukwa, and Morogoro regions, and we continue to expand
into other areas where resources are available," Ngeleja explained.
Regarding
bridge construction, Ngeleja stated that TARURA is building durable stone
bridges to improve access to essential services and boost local economies by
easing transport to markets.
