Shinyanga-In a shocking act of violence that rattled Ndala Ward in Shinyanga Municipality, 25-year-old Esta Mataranga was horrifically attacked by her 19-year-old husband, Paul Shija, who viciously gouged out her eyes before vanishing without a trace. For over a month, authorities combed the region in a tense manhunt.
Now, police have finally confirmed Shija's capture, thanks to a covert tip-off from vigilant residents. The arrest marks a pivotal moment in the search for justice, as the community grapples with the aftermath of the heinous crime that left many stunned and demanding answers.
Speaking to the media, Shinyanga Regional Police Commander, SACP Janeth Magomi, announced that Paul Shija was apprehended on September 17, 2024, after receiving a tip-off from residents. Commander Magomi explained that investigative procedures are ongoing, and once completed, the suspect will face legal action.
"The police, in collaboration with the public, continued to search for the suspect. On September 17, 2024, we successfully arrested him in the Masekelo area of Shinyanga Municipality. He is now in custody, and once the investigation is complete, he will be prosecuted accordingly," Magomi stated.
She also issued a stern warning to criminals who believe they can evade justice by hiding from the authorities, emphasizing that the police will pursue them no matter where they go. Magomi urged the public to continue working with law enforcement to curb crime and ensure community safety.
Furthermore, the Regional Commander condemned the growing trend of individuals taking the law into their own hands in disputes, urging people to resolve conflicts through legal channels to avoid such violent incidents.
"We encourage the public to continue reporting crimes and criminals. The arrest of this suspect was made possible due to the cooperation of residents, and we are grateful for their assistance," Magomi added.
One resident, Mariam Nkwabi, expressed her gratitude to the police for their relentless pursuit of the perpetrator and called for justice to take its course, noting that it would serve as a lesson to others.
