The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has signed a Grant Agreement with the Tanzanian government to finance the construction of inner ring roads in the capital city of Dodoma.
The grant, valued at JPY 4.07 billion (approximately TZS 78 billion), aims to enhance urban infrastructure by improving road connectivity and traffic flow.
The new 6.5 km road will connect the Bahi and Makulu intersections via Kikuyu Road, helping to decongest central Dodoma.
The project will introduce streetlights and reflective studs, boosting safety and rerouting heavy vehicles away from the city center.
During the signing ceremony, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance highlighted the significance of the project as a continuation of Japan's developmental support to Tanzania.
"This collaboration underscores the strong bilateral relationship between our nations," she remarked, adding that Japan’s support spans various sectors, including agriculture, health, energy, transportation, education, and good financial governance.
Deputy Permanent Secretary from the Ministry of Works, Dr. Charles Msonde, acknowledged Japan's contribution to Tanzania's infrastructure development.
He cited several landmark projects funded by Japan, including the Gerezani Bridge, the Mfugale Flyover, and roads such as the New Bagamoyo Road and the Arusha–Holili Road.
Mr. Hitoshi Ara, JICA’s Chief Representative in Tanzania, underscored the importance of the inner ring road for urban planning and economic growth.
He expressed confidence that the project would alleviate traffic congestion, reduce accidents, and improve regional connectivity by linking key national highways.
Dodoma's rapid urbanization, driven by rural migration and the relocation of government operations, has led to a population increase from 2.08 million in 2012 to 3.08 million in 2022.
The upgraded road infrastructure aligns with Tanzania’s Five-Year Development Plan III, which focuses on industrialization and achieving middle-income status.
This new road project will further solidify Dodoma’s position as the administrative and political capital of Tanzania, facilitating regional development and economic progress.
