Minister
of State in the Prime Minister’s Office for Youth, Employment, and Persons with
Disabilities, Ridhiwan Kikwete, on October 15, 2024, officially handed over the
torch and the National Flag to a team of climbers destined for the summit of
Mount Kilimanjaro. This event follows the directive issued by President Samia
Suluhu Hassan during the 2024 torch-extinguishing ceremony held in Mwanza.
The
handover ceremony took place at the Marangu Gate of the Kilimanjaro National
Park, where Minister Kikwete emphasized the symbolic significance of the torch
ascent. He stated, "This initiative showcases to the world that even after
60 years since the union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar, our bond remains
strong."
Kikwete
noted that raising the torch on Mount Kilimanjaro not only promotes the
mountain but also highlights Tanzania’s rich tourist attractions. "In this
era of significant climate change, the ascent serves as a call to action for
active participation in conservation efforts," he added.
Welcoming
Minister Kikwete, the Minister of Natural Resources and Tourism underscored
Kilimanjaro’s unique heritage. "Kilimanjaro is not just the tallest
mountain in Africa; it is a world heritage site designated by UNESCO in 1987.
It has earned Tanzania international recognition by winning awards for being
Africa's premier tourist destination," he stated.
This
year marks a significant milestone, commemorating 60 years of independence, 60
years since the Zanzibar Revolution, and 60 years of the union between
Tanganyika and Zanzibar. "We have much to celebrate, including 60 years of
conservation efforts in Mikumi and Ruaha National Parks, which are vital to our
tourism sector," he said.
The
torch, which was first raised in 1961 following Tanzania's independence by
Captain Alexander Nyirenda, serves as a lasting symbol of freedom and national
pride. "Each ascent reminds us of our patriotism, unity, and commitment to
building a strong, progressive nation," Kikwete concluded.
The
event was attended by various government officials, heads of state
institutions, religious leaders, and Deputy Permanent Secretary for Natural
Resources and Tourism, Nkoba Eliezer Mabula, among others.
