The Tanzania Human Rights Defenders Coalition (THRDC) has praised Media Aid for Indigenous and Pastoralist Community(MAIPAC) for its dedication to defending the rights of marginalized groups across Tanzania.
During a recent visit to MAIPAC's offices, THRDC’s National Coordinator, Advocate Onesmo Olengurumwa, applauded the organization’s efforts to highlight the challenges faced by these communities, which are often overlooked.
Olengurumwa emphasized that MAIPAC’s use of media to raise awareness of these issues is crucial in ensuring that marginalized voices are heard across the country.
“You are doing impactful work advocating for these communities through the media. Keep reaching broader audiences to bring their challenges to light and seek solutions,” said Olengurumwa.
He also encouraged MAIPAC to continue its projects focused on environmental conservation and combatting violence against women and children, noting their significant societal benefits.
Andrea Ngobole, MAIPAC’s Administration and Finance Manager, highlighted the organization’s ongoing commitment to covering human rights issues for marginalized communities, despite financial constraints.
He noted that the organization focuses on issues such as ending child marriages and promoting indigenous knowledge to combat climate change.
Ngobole explained that MAIPAC currently manages an environmental conservation project that records indigenous knowledge, funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) through the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).
MAIPAC is also implementing an anti-female genital mutilation (FGM) project in Longido District, sponsored by the U.S.-based Cultural Survival organization. The organization is exploring partnerships to support clean and safe energy initiatives for marginalized communities.
Ngobole added that MAIPAC has plans to launch a project on eco-friendly charcoal production. He also appealed for support to strengthen the organization’s ICT systems and develop initiatives to reduce MAIPAC’s dependency on foreign donors.
