Effective collaboration is crucial for the growth and efficiency of ports, with 90% of global trade passing through maritime hubs, according to Stella Joshua Katongo, Director of Transport Safety and Environment.
Speaking on November 30 at a gala event held at Serena Hotel, Dar es Salaam, Katongo represented Minister of Transport Prof. Makame Mbarawa at the launch of a commemorative book celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Port Management Association of Eastern and Southern Africa (PMAESA).
"PMAESA unites port operators across Eastern and Southern Africa, fostering cooperation to drive port development and efficiency. Tanzania, through the Port of Dar es Salaam, is a proud member, and we are honored to host this landmark celebration," Katongo said.
She highlighted the significance of the newly launched book, which chronicles PMAESA’s five-decade journey in supporting regional port management.
Katongo emphasized that collaboration is the backbone of port operations, enhancing capacity and competitiveness.
"PMAESA’s greatest contribution is strengthening the capacity of ports to collaborate effectively. This cooperation is essential to ensure our ports remain competitive in the global market," she added.
She noted that the Port of Dar es Salaam plays a critical role within PMAESA, serving as a key hub for trade in the region.
The association’s efforts have facilitated knowledge sharing, infrastructure development, and operational improvements that benefit member ports.
The event underscored Tanzania’s commitment to enhancing its port infrastructure and fostering regional integration.
As PMAESA celebrates its 50th anniversary, the occasion highlights the pivotal role ports play in driving economic growth and the need for continued cooperation to meet future challenges in global trade logistics.
