By The Respondent Reporter

On March 27, 2025, Dr. Khatibu Kazungu, the Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy, met with the Ambassador of Denmark to Tanzania,  Jesper Kammersgaard, and Mr. Theo Ib Larsen, the Vice President of the Denmark Government Investment Fund (IFU), in Dodoma.

The purpose of the meeting was to discuss how the Denmark Investment Fund (IFU) could support the development of Tanzania’s energy sector.

Established in 1967, IFU aims to assist emerging markets by providing capital for companies investing in sectors such as renewable energy.

IFU’s focus includes wind and solar power projects, particularly in Africa, Asia, South America, and parts of Europe.

During the discussion, the Danish delegation highlighted that IFU is well-positioned to offer both financial and technical assistance, particularly in the renewable energy sector.

“IFU can play a critical role in supporting renewable energy projects in Tanzania, helping mitigate the effects of climate change while fostering sustainable development,” Ambassador Kammersgaard stated.

Dr. Kazungu, in turn, expressed his appreciation for Denmark’s long-standing cooperation with Tanzania, particularly in education and health.

He noted that now is an opportune time to expand collaboration in the energy sector. “This is the perfect moment for us to strengthen our partnership, and we welcome IFU’s interest in investing in key energy projects like the Ruhudji (MW 358) and Rumakali (MW 222) hydropower plants,” Dr. Kazungu emphasized.

He further explained that the Ministry of Energy had already completed important preparations for these projects, including feasibility studies, and was ready to move forward with investment opportunities.

Dr. Kazungu also appealed to IFU to assist in expanding renewable energy sources in Tanzania, as outlined in the Comprehensive Energy Sector Development Plan (PSMP).

“We are looking to increase our renewable energy capacity through sources like hydro, wind, and geothermal, and we believe IFU’s involvement could significantly contribute to this goal,” he said.

He also requested IFU’s support in implementing the National Energy Specific Plan for 2025–2030, which focuses on increasing the use of renewable energy and clean cooking energy.

Ambassador Kammersgaard assured Dr. Kazungu of Denmark’s continued commitment to strengthening cooperation with Tanzania.

He emphasized Denmark's interest in supporting impactful projects like the transportation of electricity from the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project.

"Denmark remains committed to strengthening our partnership with Tanzania, especially in projects that will have a transformative impact on the energy sector," he affirmed.

The meeting concluded with an agreement to establish a joint expert team from the Ministry of Energy and IFU to review and analyze potential areas of collaboration, with the aim of presenting the findings to senior decision-makers for further action.
