Dr. Biteko: Women’s efforts are key to development

"Malkia wa Nguvu" Awards, launched by Clouds Media in 2016, have played a transformative role over the past nine years in championing women’s empowerment across Tanzania.

The platform continues to inspire and support women in entrepreneurship, economic advancement, and various aspects of social development.

Speaking during the 2025 awards ceremony held on April 4 in Dar es Salaam, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy,  Dr. Doto Biteko, commended the initiative, saying, “Since its inception, this platform has become a powerful engine of progress—not only for women but for the nation as a whole.”

He praised Clouds Media for its unwavering commitment, adding, “I wholeheartedly congratulate Clouds Media Group for this commendable effort. Establishing and sustaining this platform is a direct contribution to government efforts under the leadership of Her Excellency President Samia Suluhu Hassan to economically empower women, increase their participation across sectors, and promote inclusive development.”

Dr. Biteko further highlighted the government’s achievements in addressing barriers that hinder women’s progress.

These include increased access to education, a more supportive economic environment, partnerships with international communities, better healthcare services, clean water access, and improved energy solutions.

“Women must be seen as equal partners in development. The government has made significant strides, but more can be achieved if all stakeholders join hands,” he stressed.

He also called upon Clouds Media and women across the country to actively engage in national development campaigns, particularly the Clean Cooking Energy initiative.

“Let us protect the health of our mothers and daughters by ensuring access to clean and safe energy. I urge women to take part in this effort and adopt cleaner alternatives,” he said.

Dr. Biteko concluded by reaffirming the government’s commitment to working with partners to expand opportunities for women and ensure they are active participants in shaping Tanzania’s future.

Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner,  Albert Chalamila, also weighed in, acknowledging how perceptions of women have shifted over time.

“In the past, women were not seen as capable of achieving greatness. But today, we see women and governments proving otherwise. Women are excelling across all sectors,” he noted.

Lilian Masuka, Chairperson of the 2025 Queen of Power Committee, highlighted the impact the platform has made over the years.

“So far, we’ve awarded more than 70 outstanding women and recognized the work of over 300. These are not just numbers they represent stories of courage, transformation, and leadership,” she said.

She also revealed plans to expand their reach in 2025. “We intend to visit five additional regions this year. With government support, we can take this initiative nationwide and continue inspiring change.”

Masuka also pointed to the positive policy changes under President Samia’s leadership. “We’ve witnessed a major boost in investment and policy improvements aimed at supporting women economically,” she said.

However, she expressed concern over the continued use of unsafe energy sources among many women. “The use of charcoal and other unsafe fuels remains widespread. We call upon the government to continue providing friendly loan schemes to enable women to afford clean energy solutions and the necessary equipment to support their transition.”

The 2025 "Malkia wa Nguvu " Awards celebrated and honored numerous women for their dedication and contributions to their communities.

The event served as a strong reminder that when women are empowered, the entire society advances.
