Tanzania and Comoros have taken important strides in enhancing their collaboration within the transport sector, particularly focusing on air and maritime transport.
This commitment was reaffirmed in a recent meeting between Tanzania’s Ambassador to Comoros, Saidi Yakubu, and the newly appointed Minister of Transport of Comoros, Mrs. Hassane Alfeine Yasmine.
Ambassador Yakubu expressed Tanzania’s continued dedication to strengthening the relationship, emphasizing the strategic importance of transport in facilitating trade between the two nations.
"The transport sector is not just a means of connecting people, but a vital lifeline for trade and economic collaboration," Yakubu said.
"The daily flights now operating between Dar es Salaam and Moroni symbolize a significant achievement in our partnership, and we are committed to further expanding these efforts."
Minister Hassane acknowledged the progress made thus far, praising the partnership in air transport.\
"I am pleased with the ongoing cooperation, especially with the establishment of the daily flight route between Dar es Salaam and Moroni. This is a crucial development for enhancing connectivity between our nations," she said.
However, she also pointed out areas in need of improvement, particularly within the maritime transport sector. "While the air transport sector is growing, we must also focus on improving the efficiency of our maritime services to meet the increasing demand for trade," she emphasized.
One of the key challenges highlighted by Minister Hassane was the need to upgrade cargo handling facilities at the Dar es Salaam port, particularly for goods bound for Comoros.
"We face logistical bottlenecks that hinder the smooth movement of goods," she said. "Enhancing these facilities would not only reduce delays but also improve trade efficiency between our countries."
Another issue raised by the minister was the quality of cargo vessels operating between Tanzania and Comoros. She emphasized the need for higher safety standards and improved reliability.
"It is essential that the vessels we use meet international safety and quality standards. This will not only ensure the safe transport of goods but will also make the maritime trade more predictable and efficient," she explained.
In addition to these challenges, Minister Hassane proposed strengthening knowledge exchange programs between the aviation and maritime authorities of both countries.
"There is immense value in sharing expertise between our authorities We must learn from each other to improve our transport systems and better serve our people," she stated.
Ambassador Yakubu echoed this sentiment, highlighting the importance of collaboration in building a more efficient and interconnected transport network.
"The exchange of knowledge and best practices is key to ensuring that our transport infrastructure continues to meet the needs of our growing economies," he said.
The collaboration between Tanzania and Comoros in the transport sector sets an example of regional cooperation with the potential for far-reaching economic benefits.
By addressing the current challenges and focusing on mutual areas for growth, the two nations are laying the foundation for a more efficient, resilient transport network.
This partnership is not only strengthening their bilateral ties but also contributing to the broader goal of regional integration, positioning both nations for greater prosperity in the East African and Indian Ocean regions.
