Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy,  Dr. Doto Biteko, on April 16, 2025, led thousands of mourners and various leaders in paying their final respects to the late Engineer Gissima Nyamo-Hanga, the former Director General of the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO).

The burial ceremony took place in Migungani, Bunda District, Mara Region. Speaking after the funeral service, Dr. Biteko described the late Gissima as a visionary leader who left a strong legacy of unity within TANESCO and worked tirelessly to ensure reliable electricity access for all Tanzanians.

“Eng. Gissima is a treasure in planning and execution,” said Dr. Biteko. “After our country achieved enough power generation, he led negotiations with Zambia, and soon we will begin exporting electricity to them. That progress was fueled by his commitment. History will record his work, and we will continue to honor all that he achieved.”

Dr. Biteko added that President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan had great faith in Gissima’s leadership, and she had sent her heartfelt condolences to his family, the Ministry of Energy, and the entire TANESCO team.

“He left a mark, especially in making sure electricity projects were completed on time and the public benefitted,” the Deputy Prime Minister emphasized.

TANESCO Board Chairperson, Dr. Rhimo Nyansaho, echoed the sentiments, acknowledging the late Gissima’s contributions during his short but impactful tenure.

“I wish to express sincere condolences to the family. Though this is a great loss, the good deeds he left behind bring comfort,” he said.

“We truly thank President Samia for seeing the potential in him and appointing him during a difficult time when the country was facing power shortages. His dedication to ensuring reliable electricity was evident.”

Engineer Gissima was appointed Director General of TANESCO by President Samia on September 22, 2023.

Prior to his appointment, he worked with BP Tanzania, Business Care Services, and ESD Ltd in the United Kingdom.

He also held key roles at the Rural Energy Agency (REA) and the Tanzania Building Agency (TBA). His professional journey was marked by a deep sense of responsibility and a passion for national development through energy, leaving behind a legacy that will guide Tanzania’s power sector for years to come.
