Patients suffering from ear, nose, and throat (ENT) conditions have made up the largest group seeking care at the ongoing Specialist Medical Camp organized under the initiative of President Samia Suluhu Hassan in Nzega District, Tabora Region.
The camp, which spans all eight districts of Tabora, has drawn a significant turnout. As of May 1, 2025, over 500 patients had received specialized care at Nzega District Hospital, with 60 of them treated for ENT-related issues.
Nzega District Medical Officer, Dr. Anna Chadua, noted that both adults and children have been presenting with ENT conditions in increasing numbers.
“Before the arrival of these specialists, we were seeing between 200 and 250 patients. Within just three days of the camp, that number has doubled to 500. It’s a clear sign of the great need for such services,” Dr. Chadua explained.
She added that the district had formally requested ENT specialists from the Ministry of Health after identifying a high demand, and she expressed gratitude for the Ministry’s swift response.
In addition to providing care, the visiting specialists have also helped build the capacity of local healthcare workers.
“Learning is a continuous process. When specialists come, it’s a valuable opportunity to gain practical knowledge and training, especially in the use of advanced medical equipment,” said Nurse Namaiya Hassan from Nzega District Hospital.
Dr. Adela Pontian, a specialist in internal medicine from Chamwino Hospital, praised the initiative, noting that it also fosters collaboration and experience-sharing among medical professionals.
“We not only help patients but also benefit professionally by exchanging ideas and expertise with fellow specialists,” she said.
The Specialist Medical Camp part of President Samia’s ongoing efforts to improve healthcare access is taking place in Tabora Region from April 28 to May 3, 2025. The goal is to bring high quality, specialized medical services closer to communities that need them most.
