Mchengerwa urges innovation after President's 35% pay rise

By John Mapepele

One day after President Samia Suluhu Hassan announced a 35% increase in the minimum wage for government employees, the Minister of State in the President’s Office – Regional Administration and Local Government (TAMISEMI), Mohamed Mchengerwa, expressed his gratitude and called on public servants under his ministry to demonstrate patriotism, innovation, and commitment to national development.

Speaking on May 2, 2025, during a meeting with government employees in the Arusha Region, Mchengerwa emphasized that his ministry oversees nearly 76% of the country’s public workforce.

He said the most effective way to support the President’s vision is through diligent and results-oriented service delivery.

“My fellow Tanzanians, to fulfill our President’s directives, we must walk in her footsteps and work tirelessly to bring development to our people,” he said.

He highlighted that the 35% salary increment places Tanzania among the few African nations to offer such a substantial wage increase to its public servants, reflecting the government’s commitment to improving livelihoods.

Mchengerwa also urged government technical officers across all councils to prioritize development-oriented agendas during council sessions.

He issued a stern warning to unethical employees, advising them to reform immediately or face legal action.

To council directors, he stressed the importance of strict oversight of local development projects, adherence to government guidelines and laws, and prompt correction of audit issues raised by the Controller and Auditor General.

He also directed the strengthening of internal systems for detecting and addressing financial misconduct and called for swift action against those involved in mismanagement.

Commending the efforts of local authorities in increasing revenue and reducing financial leakages,  Mchengerwa encouraged further innovation in identifying new income sources.

He applauded Regional Commissioners nationwide for maintaining peace and driving economic progress through the effective supervision of development initiatives. He underscored that politics must never be allowed to hinder development.

Special recognition was given to Arusha Regional Commissioner,  Paul Makonda, for his creativity and strong leadership.  Mchengerwa encouraged him to remain focused and undeterred by political distractions.
