The Journalists Accreditation Board (JAB) wishes to inform all journalists practicing in Tanzania that the registration period for accreditation has been officially extended by one month, starting from 21 June 2025.
During this extension, all media professionals are required to re-register through the official JAB portal in order to obtain or renew their Press Cards.
This process is compulsory for anyone involved in journalistic work, in accordance with Section 17(1)(a) of the Media Services Act, as stated in Government Notice No. 18 dated 3 February 2017.
The requirement applies to all categories of journalists, including reporters, editors, correspondents, presenters, writers, and producers in both radio and television.
To register, applicants must visit the JAB registration portal at https://taihabari.jab.go.tz. Before accessing the system, each applicant must have the following ready: their full name as it appears on academic or professional certificates, a valid National Identification Number (NIDA), and a registration fee of fifty thousand Tanzanian shillings (TZS 50,000), which is payable online during the registration process.
In addition to completing the application form, journalists are required to upload supporting documents in PDF format, with each file not exceeding 1MB in size.
These include a recent passport-size photograph, academic certificates from accredited journalism institutions, other relevant educational or professional certificates, and a letter of recommendation from their employer. Freelance journalists must instead provide a signed letter of self-declaration.
These documents are essential, and applications without the full set of required attachments will not be processed.
This extended registration window is also open to journalists whose previous accreditation has expired. They are strongly encouraged to use this opportunity to renew their Press Cards and ensure compliance with national media regulations. Due to the high number of requests, early submission is highly recommended to avoid delays.
Information provided during registration will be used to assign a unique identification number to each journalist and to issue the official Press Card.
Additionally, this data will contribute to the development of a national database of accredited journalists, as mandated under Chapter 24, Section 229 of the Media Services Act.
The Journalists Accreditation Board urges all practicing journalists to complete their registration within the given timeframe.
Failure to comply may result in the inability to legally practice journalism in Tanzania. For further details or assistance, applicants are advised to visit the official JAB website or contact the Secretariat directly.
