The Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority (NCAA) has facilitated the participation of local beekeeping groups in the World Bee Day celebrations being held at Chinangali Park in Dodoma from May 17 to 20, 2025. This year’s theme is “Bees for Life and a Strong Economy – Let’s Protect Them.”
Speaking at the NCAA pavilion during the event, Senior Conservation Officer Flora Patta from the Community Development Unit explained that NCAA’s beekeeping initiatives focus on empowering local communities by providing beehives, offering training, and connecting beekeepers to both local and international markets through various platforms.
“These efforts are part of our inclusive conservation strategy, which promotes environmentally friendly income-generating activities,” she said.
“To date, NCAA has distributed 3,179 beehives to 125 beekeeping groups located within and around the conservation area, including the districts of Karatu, Meatu, Monduli, and the Ngorongoro Division.”he added
Flora also highlighted that through these initiatives, NCAA has supported representatives from two beekeeping groups from the villages of Rhotia Kati and Khainam to participate in the celebrations.
The groups have come with a variety of bee-based products such as honey, cough syrup, soap, beeswax, shoe polish, and more.
Stephen Marco, a group member from Rhotia Kati village, expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to showcase and sell their products at the event.
He emphasized that the experience is a valuable learning opportunity and a significant step toward improving their beekeeping practices and increasing household incomes.
“We’ve been engaged in beekeeping for some time, and now we’re producing a range of value-added products. Being part of this event has given us the chance to market our goods and gain insights from other experienced beekeepers,” he said.
The World Bee Day celebrations have brought together a diverse range of stakeholders from Tanzania and beyond, including researchers, farmers, government institutions, and private organizations.
The gathering serves as a platform for exchanging ideas and exploring sustainable ways to develop the beekeeping sector while enhancing environmental conservation.
