The 2025 Uhuru Torch race has arrived in Mufindi District on May 2, 2025, Iringa Region, where a new rural electricity project worth TZS 17 billion was officially launched.
The project is being implemented by the Rural Energy Agency (REA) under the Densification 2C plan. It aims to bring electricity to more villages in Mufindi to support development and improve people’s lives.
The leader of the Uhuru Torch race, Mr. Ismail Ussi, praised REA for doing a good job. He said the project will help villagers use electricity for cooking and reduce the long distances people walk to grind maize.
“This project will make life easier for families in the villages,” said Mr. Ussi. “President Samia Suluhu Hassan supports REA and has given funds to help bring electricity to rural areas.”
He also encouraged people to use clean and safe energy to protect their health and the environment.
REA’s Southern Highlands Project Supervisor, Engineer Danstan Kalugira, said the agency is working hard to connect all rural areas with reliable electricity.
TANESCO’s District Manager in Mafinga, Engineer Modest Mahururu, said they are promoting the use of clean energy in schools, health centers, and other public institutions that serve many people.
The contractor for the project, Engineer Festo Samson from Sagecom Energy and Telecom Sas, said the project is already 52 percent complete. So far, electricity poles have been installed in 81 out of 101 planned hamlets. The work is expected to finish before October this year.
The Uhuru Torch continues its journey across Tanzania to inspire hope and showcase important development projects.
