Dodoma, May 7, 2025 -Deputy Minister for Energy,  Judith Kapinga, announced today in Parliament that a total of 216 government schools across the country have transitioned to the use of clean cooking energy, with 146 secondary schools now using LPG gas.

Responding to a question from the Member of Parliament for Liwale, Hon. Zuberi Mohamedi Kuachauka who inquired about the nationwide rollout of gas-based cooking solutions—Hon. Kapinga stated:

“The Government, through the Rural Energy Agency (REA), continues to subsidize the construction of clean cooking infrastructure in schools. On April 20, 2025, REA received approval from the President’s Office  Regional Administration and Local Government (TAMISEMI) to install clean cooking systems in 115 additional schools. These include 16 regional science girls’ schools, 7 national boys’ schools, 66 ordinary boarding schools, and 26 historical secondary schools.”

She reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to expanding clean energy access in schools, emphasizing that installations will continue based on available funding and support from development partners.

Kapinga also revealed that the Ministry of Energy, through REA, is extending clean cooking initiatives to other public institutions.

These include facilities for the Police Force, Prisons, and Fire and Rescue services in 24 regions, as well as for refugee support centers.

Furthermore, the Deputy Minister highlighted plans to equip public health facilities under the Ministry of Health including regional, district, and national hospitals with clean cooking energy systems. A total of 21 hospitals have been earmarked for this intervention.

Responding to another question from Special Seats MP,  Tunza Malapo, regarding the inclusion of clean energy systems in the construction of new schools and health facilities, Hon. Kapinga stated:

“Through the national clean cooking energy strategy, which is already being implemented, the Government is committed to ensuring that all newly constructed schools, dispensaries, and health centers are built with integrated clean cooking infrastructure.”
