Tourism Minister team up to mark Makambako Uhuru Torch festivities

The Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism,  Ambassador Dr. Pindi Chana (MP), on May 3, 2025, joined hundreds of Makambako residents in welcoming the Uhuru Torch at Idofi Primary School grounds in Idofi Village, Makambako Town Council, Njombe Region.

The symbolic event marked the beginning of the torch's six-day journey across four districts of Njombe Region, covering a total distance of 869.7 kilometers.

Speaking at the ceremony, Njombe Regional Commissioner  Anthony Mtaka said the Freedom Torch would be used to inspect, launch, and hand over a total of 62 development projects worth TSh 17.6 billion.

“These projects reflect the government’s commitment to improving the lives of our people,” Mtaka said. “The Uhuru Torch is not just a light  it is a symbol of unity, development, and hope for all Tanzanians.”

Minister Chana, who was warmly received by local leaders and residents, commended the community’s efforts in embracing development initiatives championed through the Freedom Torch.

“This torch is a reminder that development begins with us,” said Dr. Chana. “Let us all take part in building our nation by supporting the projects it lights up and ensuring they bring long-term impact to our people.”

She added that the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism remains committed to protecting the country’s heritage and promoting sustainable tourism to boost the economy.

The 2025 Uhuru Torch race is being led by Mr. Ismail Ali Ussi from North Unguja, who emphasized that the Torch's mission is to "shine light where there is darkness, hope where there is despair, and love where there is hatred."

The reception in Makambako was marked by cultural performances, youth parades, and community engagement activities that reflected the national spirit of unity and patriotism.
