Tanzania, Sierra Leone clash today

By Flora Mkoloma

The Tanzania U20 national men’s team is set to face Sierra Leone today in a pivotal group stage match of the AFCON U20 tournament, taking place at the Suez Canal Stadium in Egypt.

After suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat to South Africa in their opening match, Tanzania is aiming to bounce back and keep their qualification hopes alive.

Head Coach Boniface Mkwasa emphasized the importance of the game, acknowledging the team’s slow start but expressing confidence in their ability to recover.

“We didn’t start the tournament the way we wanted, but we’ve moved on. Now our full focus is on Sierra Leone,” said Mkwasa.

“We know they are a competitive side, and just like us, their football is growing. We’ll approach the match with respect and caution.”

Mkwasa added that a win today is crucial: “Today’s result will give us a clear picture of our chances to advance. A loss would put our qualification hopes at risk, so we’re going in with full focus and discipline.”

Midfielder Morice Sichone echoed his coach’s sentiments, expressing the team’s readiness and determination to secure a positive result.

“We’ve prepared well. The entire squad is 99% fit, motivated, and ready to fight for the win,” said Sichone.

“After the loss in the first match, the coach reminded us not to dwell on the past but to stay strong and fight for the next opportunity.”

Tanzania now hopes to turn the tide and reignite their campaign with a strong performance against Sierra Leone.
