TMA issues five-day severe weather warning for several Tanzanian regions

The Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA) has issued a five-day alert warning of severe weather conditions across several regions, including Dar es Salaam, Kagera, Simiyu, Mara, Shinyanga, and Mwanza.

Beginning today, Wednesday, May 7, 2025, TMA forecasts heavy rainfall and strong winds reaching speeds of up to 40 kilometers per hour, along with ocean waves as high as two meters.

The affected regions expected to receive heavy rain from today include Kagera, Geita, Mwanza, Shinyanga, Simiyu, and Mara.

“Strong winds of up to 40 km/h and high waves reaching two meters are expected to affect parts of the entire Indian Ocean coastline including the regions of Tanga, Dar es Salaam, Coast (including Mafia Islands), Lindi, and Mtwara as well as the islands of Unguja and Pemba,” TMA said in a public notice.

The authority cautioned that the anticipated conditions may lead to localized flooding, disrupt marine transportation, and affect economic activities such as fishing.

On Thursday, May 8, isolated heavy rains are expected in parts of Dar es Salaam and the Coast Region, including Mafia Islands, Unguja, and Pemba. The warning for strong winds and high waves remains in effect along the coastline.

On Friday, May 9, heavy rains are forecasted for some areas of Tanga, Dar es Salaam, Coast Region (including Mafia Islands), Lindi, Mtwara, and the islands of Unguja and Pemba.

Saturday, May 10, is expected to bring similar conditions, with localized heavy rainfall across the same regions.

However, the situation is expected to ease on Sunday, May 11, with no significant rain or strong winds forecasted.
