The Managing Director of the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO), Engineer Gissima Nyamo-Hanga, has affirmed that the country’s power generation capacity is stable, following the successful implementation of various energy projects.
As of February 2025, Tanzania’s national grid capacity has reached 3,796.71 megawatts, while peak electricity demand stands at 1,908 megawatts.
“In 2021, our power generation capacity was 1,573.65 megawatts, but today, we are talking about 3,796.71 megawatts,” he stated.
Engineer Nyamo-Hanga made these remarks during a press briefing in Dodoma on March 26, 2025, where he highlighted TANESCO’s achievements and future direction under the Sixth Phase Government.
He further revealed that by the end of March 2025, TANESCO will sign contracts to acquire the first machine, which is already complete. So far, the company has taken possession of nine machines.
Nyamo-Hanga acknowledged that one of TANESCO’s major challenges in power distribution is energy losses. In 2021, transmission and distribution losses stood at 15.13%.
“We have successfully reduced this loss to 14.54%, a commendable improvement compared to our neighboring countries,” he said.
Additionally, he noted that TANESCO’s revenue has seen significant growth, rising from TZS 2.2 trillion in 2022 to TZS 2.7 trillion in 2024.
